MORE ABOUT PIOL

THE PIOL
DRESS SYSTEM

You are a fashionable woman, and you want to look your best.  Yet, too often, women are convinced that they have to wear the latest runway collection, fit into clothes that are tight in the wrong places, or wear only black to look their best. PIOL is here to show you another way.

At PIOL, we offer a unique system by which to create the perfect go-to dress - a dress that you will wear all the time because it is designed for the sole purpose to make you look and feel more attractive.

Our approach is three-fold. First is color. Everyone is born with a unique combination of hair, eyes and skin color. We believe your features should be the inspiration for the color of the clothes you wear.

Next is style. With the philosophy that it is best to flaunt what you like and hide what you don’t, we will guide you to choose a cut of dress that most flatters your figure.

Third is fit. Most women are not perfectly proportional from top to bottom nor do they fit into the standard sizing of a typical dress. Using your body measurements, we custom make a dress that is guaranteed to fit you better than anything you can find off the rack.

Together, our unique understanding to color, style and fit creates a dress you can find nowhere else. A make-to-measure dress designed just for you!

Read on to learn more about the inspiration behind the Piol Dress System.

"Remember, it is always fashionable to look your best."*

MORE ABOUT COLOR

EDITH HEAD’S PHILOSOPHY

Edith Head, famed costume designer during Hollywood’s Golden Age, created clothes for the sole purpose to make women look more beautiful and confident on screen. During a career spanning over fifty years, she developed guidelines for how to design a custom made dress that would enhance a woman’s unique, natural beauty. PIOL has adapted her approach to create the perfect go-to dress – a dress that will make you feel attractive and successful throughout your day.

THE AMAZING POWER OF COLOR

As she created wardrobes for the world’s most beautiful women, Edith Head realized that according to the color of one’s hair, eyes and skin, there were certain colors that made her “pop”. She developed the idea of a “Color Aura” – a unique palette of four colors chosen to brighten a woman’s particular coloring.

COLOR THEORY NOT COLOR TREND

This approach to color is not about trends or fashion. It is about the unique relationship between your coloring and the color of the clothes you wear. You will be amazed how her choice of colors can soften your skin tone, accent your eyes and highlight the color of your hair.

CONSIDER YOUR COLORING

It might take some time to realize the full impact that your Color Aura has on your features.  If one of your colors seems unfamiliar, buy an inexpensive scarf or earrings and study its effect on you.  You will realize how keenly attuned she was to the power of color to enhance a woman's beauty.

"I have very definitive views on color because I know what it can achieve — both for good and bad."*
—Edith Head—

MORE ABOUT THE SILHOUETTE

EDITH HEAD’S APPROACH TO STYLE

Edith Head designed the style of a dress with the same creative eye as a movie director. Determine that part of your figure upon which you want the eye to focus, highlight this area, and then simplify the rest.

ASSESS YOUR ASSETS

Look at yourself in a mirror and decide which part of your figure you want to show off and which part you want to camouflage. This understanding will guide you to the perfect style and cut of a dress.

YOUR WAISTLINE DETERMINES THE SILHOUETTE

In choosing your silhouette, you are really deciding whether to highlight, suggest or conceal your waistline. Is it something to flaunt or something to hide?

"Look at yourself from all angles and decide what kind of shape you´re in, plus what figure type you are. Without this knowledge it is impossible to know what you should do about your figure or what kind of clothes you should wear to make a success of looking better, slimmer, rounder, taller, smaller, more glamorous."*

COLOR PALETTE

THESE ARE YOUR COLORS

Colors are influenced by the colors next to them. When you wear a dress in one of your colors, your hair, eyes and skin will take on more vibrancy, tonal balance and light.

RECONSIDER YOUR CHOICES

If none of your colors seem right for you, reconsider your coloring. Perhaps your hair is light brown rather than dark blond or medium red rather than medium brown. There are forty-four different color charts. We promise there is one just right for you.

You can see Edith Head's complete color chart HERE

MORE ABOUT YOUR DESIGN ROOM:
FABRICS

FABRICS CREATED FOR YOUR PALETTE

We use the finest Italian and Japanese cottons, silks and jerseys to create fabrics in your specific color ways. From florals to geometrics, solids to neutrals, all our fabrics are of the highest, most beautiful quality.

YOUR SIZE DETERMINES THE PRINT OR THE SOLID

Choose a print or solid fabric according to your size and weight. The smaller or darker the print, the more slimming it is. The brighter or larger the print, the more it highlights the figure. The same is true for solids. The darker the solid, the more streamlined it appears. The brighter or lighter the solid, the more volume it adds.

USE YOUR COLORS TO ACCESSORIZE NEUTRALS

You can also use your color palette to accent a basic dress. We offer beautiful fabrics in soft neutrals that you can accessorize with your colors to turn into the perfect go-to dress.

"Accessories, those small wonders that can make such a big difference in the total effect of any costume . . . are not only the finishing touches that give you the look of perfection every woman desires, but they are also the magic touches that can turn one dress or suit into many."*
—Edith Head—

DESIGN DETAILS

EACH SILHOUETTE HAS ITS OWN DESIGN DETAILS

Each style of dress has its own selection of necklines, skirts and sleeves. By following the tabs, you can choose those details that highlight what you love most about your figure and camouflage the rest.

WHEN IN DOUBT

If uncertain which design detail to choose, think of the clothes you most like to wear. Chances are your favorite sweater has a neckline that is best for you or your favorite dress has just the right waistline or skirt.

FOLLOW YOUR INTUITION

As you become familiar with our unique approach to design, you will begin to make conscious decisions for what you already instinctively know is right for your figure and the clothes you wear.

"Whatever your shortcomings are - whether you're too short, too tall, too chunky or too skinny - our clothes can perform minor miracles in concealing, camouflaging and disguising them."*

MORE ABOUT YOUR DESIGN ROOM:
ADDED TOUCH

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Edith Head’s advice to women is to have classic clothes that you can dress up and down with your accessories. Clothing that is well made and thoughtfully designed can be worn all the time. This is our philosophy, too.

AN ADDED TOUCH

If, however, you would like to add a little more attention to your dress, there is one more design decision to make.  Some of the dresses have certain elements that can be highlighted with a contrast fabric in your color way. Select Added Touch for a color block effect to the final look.

TOO MANY CHOICES

If you find that there is more than one dress you would like to order, you can always save it at the bottom of Your Measurements page prior to checkout.  The dress will be saved in your account under My Dresses.  Just log in at top to find it.

"The right clothes for you are invariably those you feel right in, that you can put on and forget about, because they let your personality dominate them."*

MORE ABOUT YOUR FITTING ROOM

THE BEAUTY IS IN THE FIT

The final secret to the PIOL Dress System is the fit. By giving us your measurements, we can make a dress that fits you properly from head to toe. No off the rack dress can offer you as much. The key, however, is that you give us your true measurements.

BREATHE

Keep the tape or ribbon slightly loose as you measure. If you pull it tight, the dress will be tight, too, and will draw attention to the very areas you may want to conceal. The more comfortable the fit, the more becoming the dress will be. This is particularly true for the Tailored Dress and its form-fitting bodice which is already styled to fit snugly.

KEEP STRAIGHT AND PARALLEL TO THE FLOOR

We recommend that you measure yourself in front of a full length mirror so that you can be sure the tape or ribbon runs straight across the back of your figure.

NEED A TAPE MEASURE?

If you would like a complimentary PIOL tape measure, please send your name and address to measure@pioldress.com.  We will put one in the mail for you today.

"Excellent fit is one of the first requirements of dressing for success."*

    Color in your wardrobe
is more than something to please
the eye and more than just a matter of
personal preference.  It is a kind of magic that
can transform you from what you are to what you
would like to be.  It can make you seem slimmer or fatter,
younger or older, audacious or timid, dull or
exciting, wholesome or naughty.  But most of
all, and for our purposes here, it can make
    you look better or worse.*

    YOUR FITTING ROOM

    HOW TO MEASURE

If you don’t have a cloth tape measure, we suggest you measure yourself using a long piece of flat, narrow ribbon. Mark one end with a pen and wrap it comfortably around each part of your body. Mark with a pen where it meets. Then use a regular tape measure or ruler to measure the length of the ribbon as marked.

Be sure to measure yourself in under garments, not over clothing, keeping the tape or ribbon straight and parallel to the floor. Keep it slightly loose and breathe naturally.

    DETERMINE YOUR BUST

Wear the same bra you intend to wear with the dress. Measure around
the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape/ribbon
    parallel to the
floor.  Please note: this is a different measurement than your bra size.

    SELECT YOUR CUP SIZE

Tell us the cup size of your bra.  If you fall between
two cup sizes, we recommend you select the larger.

    UNDERSTAND YOUR WAISTLINE

Bend to one side to find your natural waistline. Measure
around your waist at this point, keeping the tape/ribbon
    parallel to the floor.

    DEFINE YOUR HIPS

Stand with your feet together. Measure around the fullest part
of your hips and buttocks, keeping the tape/ribbon parallel to
    the floor.

    SPECIFY YOUR HEIGHT

Give us your height without shoes. This will help us adjust
    the length of the hem.
